Alice sat by her sister in the warm afternoon and felt bored. She saw a White Rabbit run past, holding a watch and speaking fast. Alice followed it across the field. The Rabbit jumped into a large hole, and Alice slipped in after it. She fell a long time, past shelves and pictures, and wondered if she would ever reach the bottom.

Chapter 1: Down the Rabbit-Hole

Alice landed softly and found a long hallway with many locked doors. On a glass table she saw a tiny golden key, but she was too tall for the small door with a curtain. She found a little bottle and drank it, shrinking like a telescope. Now she was small enough to enter, but the key was still on the table. She cried in frustration.

Her tears made a large pool, and soon Alice was swimming in it. A Mouse was there too, along with a Duck and other animals that had fallen in. Alice tried to talk politely, but she mentioned her cat, and the Mouse became angry. The group drifted together, cold and wet. They all wanted to get dry, so they hurried to the bank.

Chapter 3: The Pool of Tears

On the bank, the Dodo suggested a strange race to warm up. Everyone ran in circles with no clear start or finish. After a while the Dodo declared that the race was over and that everyone had won. Alice had to give prizes, so she handed out sweets from her pocket. The animals cheered, but Alice felt confused. Then the Mouse began telling a long, sad story.

Chapter 4: The Strange Race

The White Rabbit hurried back and mistook Alice for his helper, Mary Ann. He ordered her to fetch his gloves from a nearby house. Alice entered and found a fan and a pair of gloves. She ate a small cake and suddenly grew enormous, filling the room. The Rabbit and his friends tried to push her out with ladders and stones. They even sent Bill the lizard down the chimney.

Chapter 5: Trapped in the House

After she escaped, Alice wandered into a wood and found a blue Caterpillar sitting on a mushroom. It smoked and asked, “Who are you?” Alice tried to explain, but she kept changing size and felt unsure of herself. The Caterpillar spoke in short, confusing advice. Before leaving, it told her that one side of the mushroom would make her grow, and the other side would make her shrink.

Chapter 6: The Caterpillar’s Advice

Chapter 2: The Hall of Doors

Using the mushroom, Alice changed to a better height and reached a house with a sign shaped like a fish. Inside, the air was full of pepper, and a cook threw dishes while making soup. The Duchess held a sneezing baby and spoke rudely. Alice took the baby outside to protect it, but the child slowly changed into a pig and ran away. Nearby, the Cheshire Cat appeared and smiled.

Chapter 7: Pepper and a Pig

The Cheshire Cat pointed Alice toward a tea party under trees. At the table sat the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, and a Dormouse. They offered her tea but acted impolite and changed seats again and again. The Hatter asked a riddle and would not explain the answer. They said Time was angry with them, so it was always six o’clock. Alice decided she had had enough and walked away.

Chapter 8: The Mad Tea Party

Alice walked into a beautiful garden with neat paths and red roses. She saw three card-shaped gardeners painting white roses red. They whispered nervously because they had planted the wrong kind. Alice asked questions, and they bowed in a silly way. Suddenly, loud voices came closer. A royal group arrived, led by the Queen of Hearts, who looked fierce and impatient.

Chapter 9: The Queen’s Garden

The Queen invited Alice to play croquet. But it was not normal croquet at all. The balls were live hedgehogs, and the mallets were flamingos. The soldiers, shaped like cards, had to bend into arches. The hedgehogs tried to run away, and the flamingos kept twisting their necks. The Queen yelled often and threatened punishments when things went wrong.

Chapter 10: Croquet Confusion

Alice saw the Duchess nearby, walking with the Queen. The Duchess spoke in a friendly way now, as if she had changed. She stayed very close to Alice and kept putting her chin on Alice’s shoulder. Alice felt uncomfortable, but she tried to be polite. The Duchess gave strange advice about morals in everything. Then the Queen called the Duchess away sharply, and Alice felt relieved.

Chapter 11: The Duchess Again

The Cheshire Cat appeared again, smiling from a tree. Alice talked with it quietly while the croquet game continued. The Cat teased her with riddles and strange logic. The Queen noticed the Cat’s head floating in the air and became furious. She wanted the Cat removed, but no one knew how to cut off a head with no body. While they argued, the Cat slowly faded away.

Chapter 12: The Cheshire Cat’s Smile

A strange creature called the Gryphon came to Alice and spoke in a bossy voice. It told her the Queen wanted her to meet the Mock Turtle. Alice followed the Gryphon across the sand, away from the garden. The Gryphon complained a lot and laughed at its own jokes. Soon Alice heard deep sobbing nearby. The sound grew louder as they walked toward the Mock Turtle.

Chapter 13: The Gryphon’s Order

Alice met the Mock Turtle, who sat with tears running down his face. He spoke sadly about his school days under the sea. He described strange subjects and strict teachers, and he sighed again and again. The Gryphon kept interrupting and telling him to hurry. Alice listened carefully and felt sorry for him. Then the Mock Turtle began to sing a slow, unusual song.

Chapter 14: The Mock Turtle’s Story

The White Rabbit hurried in, wearing important clothes, and announced a trial. Alice followed to a court where the King and Queen sat as judges. The Knave of Hearts was accused of stealing tarts. Witnesses spoke in silly ways, and the rules changed constantly. Alice started to grow larger again and felt braver. When the Queen shouted an order, Alice refused. Suddenly everything spun, and Alice woke beside her sister.
