Alice sat by her sister in the warm afternoon and felt bored. She saw a White Rabbit run past, holding a watch and speaking fast. Alice followed it across the field. The Rabbit jumped into a large hole, and Alice slipped in after it. She fell a long time, past shelves and pictures, and wondered if she would ever reach the bottom.
Chapter 1: Down the Rabbit-Hole
Alice landed softly and found a long hallway with many locked doors. On a glass table she saw a tiny golden key, but she was too tall for the small door with a curtain. She found a little bottle and drank it, shrinking like a telescope. Now she was small enough to enter, but the key was still on the table. She cried in frustration.
Her tears made a large pool, and soon Alice was swimming in it. A Mouse was there too, along with a Duck and other animals that had fallen in. Alice tried to talk politely, but she mentioned her cat, and the Mouse became angry. The group drifted together, cold and wet. They all wanted to get dry, so they hurried to the bank.
Chapter 3: The Pool of Tears
On the bank, the Dodo suggested a strange race to warm up. Everyone ran in circles with no clear start or finish. After a while the Dodo declared that the race was over and that everyone had won. Alice had to give prizes, so she handed out sweets from her pocket. The animals cheered, but Alice felt confused. Then the Mouse began telling a long, sad story.
Chapter 4: The Strange Race
The White Rabbit hurried back and mistook Alice for his helper, Mary Ann. He ordered her to fetch his gloves from a nearby house. Alice entered and found a fan and a pair of gloves. She ate a small cake and suddenly grew enormous, filling the room. The Rabbit and his friends tried to push her out with ladders and stones. They even sent Bill the lizard down the chimney.
Chapter 5: Trapped in the House
After she escaped, Alice wandered into a wood and found a blue Caterpillar sitting on a mushroom. It smoked and asked, “Who are you?” Alice tried to explain, but she kept changing size and felt unsure of herself. The Caterpillar spoke in short, confusing advice. Before leaving, it told her that one side of the mushroom would make her grow, and the other side would make her shrink.
